The cake has been baked. The icing rolled out and placed delicately onto your edible masterpiece. You step back to admire your work. You are very pleased with it but something is missing, you can’t quite put your finger on it but something doesn’t look quite right. Then it comes to you, the little finishing touches that make a cake go from looking average to amazing!
Smoothers
Smoothers are a quick and simple way of making the icing on your cake look smooth, shiny and professional. Using the rounded edge smoother at the side of the cake and the square edge smoother on top of your cake, use suitable pressure to work the icing. This can be used on the sides and the top and is a technique that, once mastered, will be your lifesaver. Note: This must be done when the icing is still fresh!
Crimping
This is one of the most simple cake techniques that looks like you have spent hours painstakingly carving little details onto the outside of your cake and cake board. These little tweezers are fantastic. They come in so many different designs; the hardest part of this skill will be thinking which one you should buy first! You simply hold your crimpers at a 45 degree angle to your cake and pinch the icing. Note: This must be done when the icing is still fresh!
Icing your board
Such a simple extra that really makes a cake stand out from the rest. You spend all that time and effort making the cake taste fabulous, making the icing sit beautifully and then you put it on a generic silver board like every other cake. Icing your board is simple and quick and really makes it stand out. Just paint your board with piping jelly using a silicon brush and either ice the board and cake all in one or ice the board separately for a different colour or texture.
Bows
