FAQs
About Confection Perfection & the Cake School
- What facilities do you have?
Our shop and teaching room are both on the ground floor (it is a single storey building with a slight step to get in through a standard door). We have 2 teaching rooms. Within the building there is one toilet, there are hand washing facilities within the teaching room together with tea and coffee making facilities. Drinking water is readily available. There is a fridge that you are welcome to use if you want to put your lunch in to cool! Both the shop and teaching room has central heating (although it is an old building so if it is very cold maybe bring an extra jumper!) In summer the building stays naturally nice and cool.
- What happens if I am running late?
Firstly don’t panic! Just get here safely. It is an awful feeling if you are late but we do understand….these things happen. If you are able to let us know that you are a little behind we will make sure that we slip you in an easily as possible when you arrive, Chances are you will only miss the housekeeping information and one of the team can fill you in as we show you to your space.
If it is an evening course the shop will be closed but we always have a notice on the door so if you call us when you arrive we will pop down and let you in.
- What do I do about lunch?
If you are spending the day with us you are welcome to bring a packed lunch to eat during the break. We tend to have around a half hour break and you are welcome to eat here. Alternatively there is a deli a short walk from us.
- What happens when I arrive?
When you get to us we will be expecting you. You will be greeted with a smile and we will show you the teaching room where you can make yourself at home and make a cup of tea!
- Where do I park?
We are fortunate that there is car parking just outside the cake shop/ teaching rooms.
- How do I get to you?
Visit our Directions page for details of by car, walking or public transport.
- What do I do with my things while I am cake decorating?
Depending on the course we often have plenty of room in the teaching room for bags and coats etc. We also have coat hooks in the cloakroom so you can hang your coats up…which avoids them getting covered in icing!
- Can I get a qualification with you?
Yes! We are accredited tutors of the PME sugar craft diplomas. Each diploma is a qualification in its own right and if you work for all 3 diplomas you will ultimately achieve your Masters in cake decorating.
About our courses
- Is there a minimum or maximum age limit for your courses?
Within our course descriptions we make a recommendation as to the appropriate age for the course…this is a guideline. The age recommendation is based on dexterity required and attention span necessary for the particular topic in question and is generalised.
We have specific courses aimed at people wanting to learn professional skills, We have particular courses designed with our younger enthusiasts in mind. If there is a course that appeals to you and you are unsure as to whether it is age appropriate please speak with us and we will advise you accordingly.
- What do I do if I can’t make it to the course I have booked?
Sometimes things don’t go according to plan and we understand this. If you are able to give us 2 weeks’ notice that you are double booked or having to work we will happily transfer your booking to another date and a £10 transfer fee will apply.
If you are unable to attend at the last minute your course will still need to be paid for. We have often either baked cakes or weighed ingredients or prepared a selection of icings specifically for you and we are then unable to use these for anybody else.
On certain occasions, if we are able to fill your place at the last minute, we may be able to transfer your booking.
If you miss a week of a 6 week course (for example) we may be able to catch you up by starting a little earlier the next week. This very much depends on the subject matter and if you need more than a quick catch up we would recommend a private lesson at a cost of £50.
- I haven’t been to a class for years – what if I am really nervous?
If you are really nervous you will not be alone! So many of our students have decided that it really is time they did something for themselves, but have not been into a classroom for years! We do make a huge effort to make you feel welcome, at ease and generally at home with us. We know that for some people it can be a great opportunity to meet new people and try something new while for others is it massively daunting. All our tutors were once students at Confection Perfection…this is where we started, so we can really put ourselves in your shoes. If you have even the slightest concern, either on arrival, or before you get to us, we would much rather you drop us a line or telephone and we will be more than happy to have a chat with you before you get to us. You are our guests and we want you to feel very much at home.
- I just want to do this for fun… What if I am no good at it?
The lovely thing about cake decorating is that everyone does it just a little bit differently! Whilst some people have an obvious flair for what they are doing, all our tutors take you through things step by step with plenty of assistance available if you need it. We limit the numbers on our courses so that your tutor is available to give you the attention and support you need. We aim to create a very friendly and inclusive environment within our classrooms so even if something does not go according to plan we are always there, right on hand, to help.
- Do you have to be a professional cake decorator to attend a course?
Absolutely not! Whilst some of our courses are aimed at people who are looking to make and sell cakes and run their own businesses, most of our courses are suitable for any ability level. In our course descriptions we give an indication as to whether you would benefit from a little experience before attending a certain course or whether it is a course suitable for complete beginners. Whichever course you choose we ultimately want you to have fun!
- Do you have student discounts?
As one of our students you will receive a 10% discount on any shopping on the day (or throughout the duration of an evening course). We also often have “bundle” offers available exclusively to students on particular courses and your tutor will advise you of any super deals to which you are entitled!
- Will there ever be any more to pay?
The course price advertised is the price you pay and will not alter. During your course you may decide you would like to embellish your design – you may want additional colours or ribbons to those included in the course price. This is no problem – you can just choose your additional items and pay in the day!
- What do I do if I can’t afford to pay all in one go?
We completely understand that there may be courses you would like to attend but you just can’t do it all in one go. We are happy to offer individual payment plans subject to an additional £10 administration charge. If this kind of arrangement would be helpful please speak with us on an individual basis and we will be happy to help.
- When do I pay for my course?
Full payment is due at the point of booking – either by card or paypal on line, card over the telephone or card or cash in store. In store we accept all major debit and credit cards except American Express!
- How do I know my place has been secured?
If you book online a confirmation e mail is automatically generated. If for any reason you have not received it, check your “SPAM” folder as some computers are extremely vigilant and dump our e-mails because they come from an “info@” address!
If you book by telephone/ in the shop we will verbally confirm the details with you.
- How do I book onto one of your courses?
It is easy peasy to book! You can book on-line through our website, you can pop in to our shop and book with one of the team face to face or you can telephone us on 01622 764 852 and we will take your booking over the telephone.
- You have so many courses – how do I decide?
You firstly need to decide what you would really enjoy learning. Our website gives you a clear description of the skills covered in each course. You will find information about the skill level and there will be a picture of the cake(s) and techniques you will learn. If you are still unsure you can call and speak to any one of our friendly team and we will happily give you some guidance.
General Questions
- How do I transport my cakes home with me?
You will always be given a box to take your creations home in. We have lovely cake bags which the box will sit in nice and flat to transport your cake. The bags cost £3.50. This will also prove useful for future cake projects!
- What if I have food allergies?
Many of our courses are skills based so you may not actually eat what you make!
If we are weighing ingredients in advance for you, or if we are baking a cake for you, just let us know your particular requirements (eg. you may want a fruit cake without any alcohol) and we will do our best to either accommodate or advise you accordingly.
- What if I need additional assistance?
We are aware that some of our students need additional assistance – whether that be due to mobility, language, a learning disability or something unique to you. Whatever your circumstances we will do whatever we can to enable you to participate. If you need a carer/interpreter to attend with you that is no problem. If you would like your notes to be printed in a larger font, that is no problem. What we would ask is that you tell us about your situation at the point of booking so that we can work with you to make your experience as positive as possible.
- I am disabled, can I access your shop and teaching rooms?
Our shop and teaching room are on the ground floor but there is a slight step at each entrance and space is very limited so manoeuvring can be difficult . If you would like to visit or attend a course with us, please get in touch in advance so we can try to meet your needs appropriately.
- How will my products be delivered? When will I receive my order?
We send our recipe cards and gift vouchers via Royal Mail.
All items are sent within 2 days of the order being received and sent 1st class post.
